The San Marino Grand Prix was boycotted by the FOCA teams with just 14 cars starting the race. Gilles Villeneuve was killed during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. Riccardo Paletti was killed during the start of the Canadian GP after he slammed into the back of the stalled Ferrari of Didier Pironi. Didier Pironi had a career ending crash during practice for the German Grand Prix.
