The 1976 season went down to a final race decider between Niki Lauda and James Hunt at the Japanese Grand Prix, Fuji.

The race at Fuji was held on 24th October 1976 in atrocious weather. Lauda considered the conditions too extreme to race and so retired his car after 2 laps.

James Hunt continued to race and after 61 laps was leading, however he had to stop for tyres as the track dried and he resumed in 5th place. After the pitstop he was in 5th position and set off after the cars that were still on worn rubber and by the end of the race he was placed in 3rd position, becoming the 1976 World Champion by 1 point from Niki Lauda.

Niki Lauda had a near fatal accident during the opening lap at the German GP, missing only 2 Grand Prix.

Ferrari won the 1976 Constructor's Championship by 9 points over McLaren.
